Accelerated Reader is a computerized reading program which promotes student reading comprehension. This program supplements our classroom reading instruction. Students read library books which are identified by book (reading) level. The students book (reading) level is initially identified by the STAR computerized reading test. Students are tested on STAR at the beginning, the middle and the end of school year. This reading level is called a reading zone and provides students with books that are "just right" in their ability to read. After a student has read a book, the computerized AR test can be taken in the classroom or the library. The AR program assigns points for each book depending on the length and difficulty of the words in the book. As students progress in their reading ability the teacher moves the reading zone up.
The school year is divided into approximately six reading periods. Reading point goals are individual for each student. Goals are set by teacher and student. At the end of the reading period those students who have met their goal with 85% comprehension are invited to attend a special reading celebration.
